Gomer is an area in eastern Europe - including several nations which have been under Russian influence . Togarmah was a son of Gomer. Part of his family settled in the Baltic states we know as Estonia , Lithuania and Latvia. Others settled in Turkey . Turkey is surely being drawn into the Islamic world .  European Parliament ratified the EU's historic expansion eastward on Wednesday, paving the way for 10 new members to join next year.

In 10 separate votes on each candidate, the 626-member EU assembly, meeting in Strasbourg, France, voted overwhelmingly to back their accession to the club, which is scheduled for May 1, 2004.

All 10 candidates --- Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia,  Malta and Cyprus --- got the Parliament's backing, despite some doubts from some legislators.

"The time for enlargement has come, and that time is now," European Parliament President Pat Cox said after the vote.

"This is the choice to put an end to a Europe fractured by Europe's barbaric 20th century and to create a Europe reconciled and united, around common ideals and common values," Cox added.

After the European Parliament vote, all 15 EU national parliaments must also approve the expansion. In the new members, referendums are being organized on EU entry.

Voters in Malta and Slovenia have already backed membership. Hungary is the next country to vote, on Saturday.

The EU Parliament urged the new members to "fulfill commitments" and to fix remaining problems, especially in fighting corruption, crime and in protecting minority rights.

 It also insisted that the expanded EU of 25 "should speak with a common voice in world politics," and urged all members to show "a stronger sense of solidarity" in forging common policies, including a joint foreign and defence policy.

The European Parliament is the only EU legislature that votes individually on each of the 10 candidates. National parliaments will vote on the 10 as a whole.

Ahead of the vote, several EU lawmakers questioned whether the bloc was ready to take on 10 new members at the same time, fearing it would lead to fights over money and powers.

Green Party leader Daniel Cohn-Bendit said most of his 45-member grouping would vote for all 10 candidates, but some would abstain or vote against because they believe the current EU is not yet ready.
