Netanyahu calls for 'crippling' Iran sanctions - Aug 27 <- a "coalition of the willing" could enact its own measures.
In a joint press conference held between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and German Chancellor Angela Merkel Thursday afternoon, Merkel expressed the need to put harsher sanctions against Iran in order to force it to abandon its nuclear program, and was also adamant in the demand for a halt in West Bank settlement construction.
"We feel a ban on future settlements is an important building block to making the prelaunch of the peace process possible," Merkel said.
The chancellor said she was aware of domestic difficulties "to put down markers on this issue."
"We think that stopping building in the settlements is an important building block. But [we] also expect Palestinians to take steps as well." She said she and Netanyahu discussed the Iranian nuclear program.
"There is an offer on the table and Iran needs to respond positively. If they don't, we will have to talk about sanctions," she said in an apparent reference to a ban on Iranian imports of refined oil products.
Netanyahu praised Merkel and Germany for their support of Israel and said that one of the main issues of discussion during the meeting was Iran, whose true nature was exposed following the elections there and in June and the bloody aftermath that followed.
"Israel expects all responsible members of the international community to address this issue… I heard from Merkel that Germany is committed to addressing this threat. There is not much time," Netanyahu said.
Netanyahu added that "the most important thing to be done is to put in place crippling sanctions." He said it would be best if such sanctions would have the staple of the UN Security Council, but if not, a coalition of the willing could also take action.
