MOST OF THEM OPENLY AGAINST THE U.S.

 

A major military exercise is taking place in Abkhazia, Georgia’s Moscow leaning breakaway region, radio Rossiya reported. Local military officials have already described this exercise as “unprecedented” in the history of the unrecognized republic.

The weapons training exercise involve around 6,000 servicemen and artillerymen. Aircraft, the navy, artillery and armored vehicles have been deployed. The Abkhaz president, Sergey Bagapsh, is to observe the exercise.

Abkhazia is formally an autonomous republic within Georgia, independent de facto, although not recognized as such internationally.

Abkhazian leaders have made alternating demands in recent years. At times, they have insisted on full independence, and at other times, they have requested associate membership in the Russian Federation.

 

 However, the Russian government has been slow to respond to the latter proposal, fearing the negative effect of such an action on its relations with Georgia.
